Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 5, titled “The Grand Design,” finally shatters the one thing keeping Wilson Fisk’s darkness at bay. Actress Ayelet Zurer explains why the creative team felt compelled to personally call her about the decision.
Ayelet Zurer on why Vanessa dies in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 5 Ayelet Zurer told Variety at the show’s New York premiere that the decision caught her off guard. “Every person on the team had to call me directly to explain why and how,” Zurer said. “They were often so emotional about it.
But I really felt like it was important for the story, too. To have an explosion that sends Vincent’s character, Kingpin, to a whole new level of crazy.” The episode features Vanessa waking up after surgery and sharing a quiet moment with Fisk. She asks for pineapple juice and requests that Fisk retell the story of how they met.
However, her condition rapidly deteriorates, the monitors begin to malfunction, and doctors fail to stabilize her as the ECG flatlines. Zurer reflected on the emotional weight of closing out a decade-long arc with the character. “Personally, it was just a really gut-wrenching experience where I had to say goodbye to everything that we were working on in the last ten years,” Zurer said.
“It was emotional,” she added. The episode intercuts Vanessa’s final moments with flashbacks to her first meeting with Fisk at an art gallery. Throughout Born Again, the show positioned Vanessa as the voice of reason, keeping Fisk’s violent impulses in check.
Governor Marge McCaffrey, played by Lili Taylor, even sought Vanessa out in Episode 4 to confirm she could temper her husband. Zurer noted that Fisk’s hunger for power was never something Vanessa alone could satisfy. “She’s never going to be enough.
Nothing is going to be enough,” Zurer said. Vanessa’s death marks the second major original series character killed in Born Again, following Foggy Nelson’s assassination by Bullseye in Season 1. Originally reported by Anubhav Chaudhry on SuperHeroHype.
