Motion Picture Group’s New Line division. The Flood to release in theaters in 2028 The project, titled The Flood, has a release date of August 11, 2028. It was revealed during the final moments of the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas.
The announcement reunites Zach Cregger with his Weapons producing team, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. In a noteworthy addition, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment has also come aboard to produce the sci-fi thriller. Spielberg has been a vocal admirer of Zach Cregger’s work.
As in an interview with Empire, the legendary director shared that Weapons satisfied his genre cravings so completely that it “arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie.” While the plot specifics remain under wraps beyond a setting on a distant space station, The Flood represents a shift from Cregger’s previous modern-set horror freakouts into a more pronounced science-fiction category. The road to this The Flood release date announcement wasn’t entirely smooth. Before landing at New Line, the project was in development at Netflix.
Reports indicated that Cregger remained committed to a theatrical window for the film that reportedly clashed with the streamer’s typical release strategy. With Warner Bros. and New Line, Cregger found partners aligned with his theatrical ambition. “Zach is the rarest of filmmakers, fluent in every genre he touches, and we’re excited to continue our partnership,” said New Line president Richard Brener.
Cregger echoed the sentiment regarding the studio that backed Weapons. “I’m incredibly excited to continue my partnership with Mike, Pam, Richard, and the teams at Warner Bros. and New Line,” Cregger stated. “They are true champions of bold creativity, united by a shared ambition to deliver unforgettable theatrical experiences for audiences. That’s the dream for any filmmaker (via The Hollywood Reporter).” All in all, The Flood ensures 2028 will be a banner year for the filmmaker’s theatrical output.
